Sometimes you go through life with people in your environment but you never really get to know them. Recently Tony Russett came to St. Mary's after having had an unfortunate accident. Although I knew Tony at Procter and Gamble, we never really shared much dialogue. Tony was admitted to KGH on September 4th - paralyzed - unable to move his arms or legs. By a stroke of luck Tony's room is right beside mine and I have enjoyed getting to know Tony over these past few days. The nurses call us the P&G boys and we certainly put smiles on their faces. Both of us have been blessed to have wonderful loving partners, him by Elaine and myself, my girl Marijo, and great family and friend support systems.
I want to tell you a little bit about Tony. He has strong faith, quick witted, and is truly a wonderful human being. He has put smiles on my face that don't go away. We laugh and crack jokes all day long and I am sure when we are both outside the walls of St. Mary's we will have left a lasting impression on the St. Mary's staff. People along my journey have said that I am an inspiration to them but I have to tell you - Tony is an inspiration to me.
This will be my last week at St. Mary's as I am scheduled to get out on Thursday afternoon. I am excited to leave, but I know that reality is waiting for me on the other side of the doors.
